Units of measurement
Planning Space Economics supports two systems of measurement units: Imperial and Metric. The Imperial system is used in all calculations.
The set of system units cannot be edited; however, if the unit you need is not available you can create a Custom Unit.
For version 16.5 Update 33 and later: Custom units are based on presets; see Custom units of measurement and Manage custom unit presets.
For earlier versions: Custom unit definitions are specific to one variable; see Create custom units.
Unit scales
When variables are displayed, different scales may be applied: Small, Medium and Large.
The unit definition specifies labels for each scale, for both the Imperial and Metric systems, and conversion factors between the scales. The Medium scale is the basic one and the conversion factors are set in relation to it.
Variable unit settings
To view the unit settings for a variable, you cab use the single variable editor or the Variable Edit window (see Edit variables). In either case, click the ellipsis button in the Units selection field/column:
The Unit Definition dialog will be displayed.
Note: If the unit is a system unit, all of the fields will be disabled for editing.
Unit Definition: Method settings
The unit 'method settings' are described in the following table.
Field | Description |
---|---|
Is Currency Unit | Specifies if the unit is a monetary unit. |
Timescale Consolidation Method | Specifies the method used to convert values between different periodicities (see Timescale consolidation methods). |
Aggregation Method | Specifies the method used to consolidate values. The available methods are: Sum, Maximum, Minimum, Average and WeightedAverage. |
Back Allocation Method | Specifies the method used to split between projects after ringfenced calculations. The available methods are: NoSplit, EvenSplit and WeightedSplit. |
Unit Definition: Imperial settings
The Imperial Settings section contains factors for conversion between the different scales. Each unit can have its values defined on three scales: Large, Medium and Small; the Medium scale is the basic one and other scales are defined in relation to it.
The Display Label section contains labels for the unit at different scales. Planning Space uses 'M' for thousand and 'MM' for million; for example, the labels for oil volume are 'Bbl', 'MSTB' and 'MMSTB'.
Unit Definition: Metric settings
The Metric Settings section contains Display Label settings for the metric unit at different scales.
The conversion factors here must convert the Imperial Medium unit to Metric at each scale.
